A monthly sports programme featuring
a wide range of Irish Sports events and sports news, with a community link. This
month on Sports Nationwide:
Sailing
We visit Cork Week, which is Ireland’s
largest and Europe’s second largest international sailing regatta. Hosted by the
Royal Cork Yacht Club - the oldest yacht Club in the world, over 500 boats and
5,000 crew from 21 countries took part in a festival of on-water and off-water
activities. We spotlight the huge volunteer input into this extraordinary
community supported sailing event.
Hiking
Debra Ireland has embarked on many treks
over the years. We capture forty two walkers successfully completing Debra
Ireland's trek to Slovenia last year where members of the group climbed to the
summit of Slovenia's highest mountain - Mt. Triglav (2,864m). Sports Nationwide
talked to the organisation about their upcoming trips and how to get involved
with the treks this year to the Dolomites in Italy and Kilimanjaro in Africa.
Aviation
We took a trip over to Newcastle
Aerodrome in County Wicklow recently, to catch up with Eddie Goggin who was in
practice for this years advanced World Aerobatics Championships that are being
held in Oregan USA
Golf
Following her sister Leona's success in
the Women’s Championship in Westport, Lisa triumphed over her sister to take the
Girls Championships in Mullingar Golf Club recently. It is the first time in the
history of Irish Golf that the Irish Champions of both the Women’s and Girl’s
events come from the same family let alone twin sisters. Lisa took early
advantage in the match against her sister going 1up with a par on the second
hole, Lisa went on to birdie the 10th going 2up and they both birdied the 12th
before Lisa birdied the 14th taking the match to 3up and then secured the match
on the 15th green with a 4 and 3 win. We have a short report on the
Championships and we plan to do a feature on the twins later in the year.
Clay Target Championships
We visit Pepperstown Ardee, County Louth
for the National Association of Regional Game Councils (NARGC) Inter County Clay
Target Championships. Teams of 12 shooters from 24 counties took part with
several of our International competitors involved. Each Parish in rural Ireland
has a Game Club and is involved in shooting of pheasant and wildfowl. Over 35
years ago these Parish clubs amalgamated to create a County Regional Game
Council and in turn the Counties came together to form the NARGC (National
Association of Regional Game Councils). This organisation has a current
membership of approximately 27,000 divided into 900 clubs.

GTV cameras were in Cape Town, South Africa
following the Irish team competing in the Red Bull Cape Town Man event.
Red Bull Cape Town Man, was a extreme
sea, land and air relay race. 70 teams facing off against each other and the
elements on a rugged peninsula known to early explorers as 'The Cape of Storms'.
Competitors pushed their minds and bodies to the limit in a gruelling mental and
physical challenge involving three extreme sporting disciplines:
adventure biking, mountain running and speed paragliding.
