PRESS RELEASE from the Woodvale Events website

www.atlanticrowingrace.co.uk/news_releases/news.php

At 1643 hours GMT today (Sunday 08 January 2005), a 406 Mhz EPIRB activation signal was received by Falmouth Coastguard.  This signal originated from a beacon registered to Boat No. 1 – Digicel Atlantic Challenge, crewed by Irishmen, Gearoid Towey and Ciaran Lewis. A full scale rescue mission was immediately put into place, coordinated by Norfolk Coastguard in America, whose search sea area Digicel Atlantic Challenge was located in, with the assistance of Woodvale Events Race HQ. A 98000 ton carrier vessel called the Hispania Spirit was diverted to the last received position for Digicel Atlantic Challenge and at approximately 2230 hours GMT, they arrived on the scene.  They were alerted by a flare and a strobe light to the upturned hull of Digicel Atlantic Challenge and nearby a liferaft containing both Ciaran and Gearoid safe and well. Ciaran and Gearoid have now been taken onboard the Hispania Spirit where they have been given clothes, food and medical check up.  However, both are reported to be unharmed if not a little bit shocked by this expereince.

The crew of Atlantic Challenge, Ciaran Lewis and Gearoid Towey, set out on Wednesday 30th November 2005 to become the first Irish crew to win the Race. In the process Atlantic Challenge will be raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society and Merchant's Quay Ireland.

GTV Sport covered the build up to the event and the race start. We had cameras onboard to follow the progress of the crew. A brief report on the race start was broadcast in the December and January edition of the SPORT MONTHLY programme (Click Here to view Video (4.86MB Zip File) of the December broadcast. A TV Documentary programme on the teams adventure was planed to be broadcast in May 2006.
